Diamonds are usually graded on the 4C’s of the GIA scale for colour, clarity, carat weight and cut, to determine their rarity and desirability. Secrets Simulant Diamonds are graded on the same scale as mined diamonds. Our stones are grown for perfection in strictly controlled laboratory conditions to ensure your new Simulant Diamond’s grade is within the rarest grades being D-F colour, and near flawless clarity. They are also cut to ensure the highest levels of fire, brilliance and scintillation. Most display hearts and arrows. Each is explained below in more detail.
Simulant Diamonds are a sustainable lab-grown alternative to mined diamonds and do not share the same chemical structure, nor are they synthetic diamonds made from a carbon base.

Colour
Colour is graded alphabetically from D to Z, with D being the absolute finest colourless stone rating in the world. Discerning the difference between each grade of colour is extremely difficult, and requires a qualified gemmologist with specialist equipment. Our Signature Simulant Diamonds are graded D to E colour when compared on the GIA colour scale.
CLARITY
Clarity is determined by the levels of imperfection in a stone. Almost all diamonds and Simulant Diamonds have very tiny internal marks (inclusions) and external irregularities (blemishes). Many inclusions are not discernible to the naked eye and can only be seen under magnification.
A diamond can be described as "flawless" only if it has no visible imperfections when viewed under 10X magnification by a qualified gemmologist and diamond grader. Secrets Diamond Simulants are graded Internally Flawless to VVS2.
Carat Weight
The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. The word carat originates from the seeds of the carob tree, which were well known for their uniformity and consistent weight. Historically, diamonds and gemstones were weighed against these seeds. Today one carat is defined as one-fifth of a gram or 200 milligrams and the term carat remains the measure of weight. Two similar mined diamonds that have identical carat weights may actually appear very different depending on how they have been cut. For example a one carat mined diamond could actually appear much smaller than the next. This is because they are cut to save weight and to yield more from the rough stone. Our diamond simulants are cut consistently for perfection, not to save weight.
Secrets Shhh Diamond Simulants have a higher specific gravity than mined diamonds, which means they actually weigh more. Therefore we express their weight as a “carat equivalent weight” which is calculated by measurement.
Cut
A well-proportioned and well cut diamond optimizes refracted light which creates its internal fire and brilliance. Diamonds are cut with facets, or separate flat surfaces, which follow a mathematical formula and are placed at precise angles in relation to each other. This relationship is designed to maximize the amount of light refracted through the diamond and thereby increase its sparkle and beauty. These proportions are often varied by diamond cutters to yield more weight from the rough they are cutting, resulting in less fire and brilliance.
Secrets Diamond Simulants are cut using the most precise and exacting standards demanded by the diamond industry to ensure maximum fire and brilliance. Many of our round brilliant cut stones display a hearts and arrows pattern.
Our Favourite Cuts
Round Brilliant
The most popular stone shape is the Round Brilliant, which came into existence roughly 60 years ago.
It’s an adaptation of the brilliant cut, created in the early 18th Century, and remains the most popular cut to this day.
It suits absolutely everyone with its sophisticated brilliance and fire.
The Oval shape is also brilliant cut, borrowing the same faceting techniques from the Round Brilliant although additional facets are added to assist in the elimination of the “bow-tie effect” in the mid-section of the stone.
The Oval cut is sophisticated and ideal for someone who values elegance but is after something unique.
Oval cut stones are equally flattering for shorter fingers, as they create the illusion of length.
The Pear shape is also brilliant cut, except the proportions are elongated along one end.
Additional facets are added to the tip of the stone (called “French Tipping”) to counter light leakage in the area. The pear or ‘teardrop’ can be worn facing either way creating different looks.
This is a truly show-stopping cut for those who want to stand out.
The Emerald cut includes what are called “step” cuts. These comprise larger facets, which act like mirrors.
There are fewer facets than most other cuts and because of the size and shape of these, the emerald cut has a classic beauty and elegance quite distinct from the other variants of the brilliant cut.
The Radiant cut has 70 facets and is a variation of the brilliant cut.
The crown section has a combination brilliant-step cut arrangement and the pavilion section has more of a brilliant styling with a slight step-styling in the upper sections just below the girdle.
This is a supremely elegant style and the rectangular proportions lend themselves to many different styles of design.
The Marquise cut is another adaptation of the 58 faceted Round Brilliant cut.
This shape complements long slender fingers particularly well.
Marquise cut stones have an elongated shape with pointed ends supposedly inspired by the smile of the Marquise de Pompadour and commissioned by the Sun King, France’s Louis XIV.
The Asscher cut is a unique design created specifically for the Dutch Royal Family in 1902.
It has an almost octagonal shape and was a departure from the popular brilliant cut of the 1800s and became the forerunner of the standard Emerald cut.
Its beauty is breathtaking due in part to the angled corner facets, which gives it a look of an inverted pyramid, as well as being commonly attributed to the Art Deco period.
