Earrings FAQs Answered
How do you clean earrings?
As with all jewellery pieces, your earrings need a bit of TLC every now and again to keep them looking their best. It’s normal for things like make-up, moisturisers, hairspray, natural oils, and everyday dirt and grime to gradually build up – especially on those staple pieces, like a favourite pair of stud earrings. We recommend that you give your earrings a proper clean about once a month. It’s important not to use any coarse materials or harsh chemicals as these can damage the precious metals and gemstones that make your earrings so special. The best way to restore your pieces to their former glory is to soak them in warm, soapy water for 10-20 minutes to loosen any oils and grime. You can then use a soft toothbrush to remove stubborn dirt, rinse thoroughly, and gently dry with a soft cloth. This is a good opportunity to inspect your earrings for any loose stones or parts that may need professional attention. At your local Secrets Shhh store, we offer expert complementary jewellery cleaning, servicing, and repairs so that your earrings look as good as new.
How do you take out earrings?
After first having your ears pierced, you should leave the starter studs in for 6 weeks before changing them. This is to allow the skin to heal around the hole, and you will then be able to swap earrings in and out without discomfort or damage to your lobes. When taking studs out, make sure that you start with clean hands to avoid any infection in the piercing. Hold the front of the earring between the thumb and index finger of one hand, and grasp the back of the earring between the thumb and index finger of the other hand. Gently pull the backing away, and then allow the stud earring to slide out at the front of the ear and collect it in your other hand. Don’t try to pull both sides away at the same time. If you are wearing hoops, there may be a small piece that needs to be disconnected behind the ear before you can slide the hoop out. If you are unsure about how to remove your earrings, you can visit your nearest Secrets Shhh store where our friendly team of experts will be happy to help you.
How do you disinfect earrings?
Disinfecting your earrings on a regular basis is important to avoid infection – particularly while your piercing is still healing, or if you are wearing second-hand earrings. There are several different methods you can use, but you should always start by washing your hands thoroughly. You can then soak a cotton pad with either hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol and gently wipe, dab and rub all parts of the earring. This kills bacteria and helps to shine up your earrings too. If you don’t have either of these to hand, you can bring a pan of water to the boil (or heat in a mug in the microwave) remove from the heat, and then leave your earrings to soak for about 20 mins. This will help to kill germs and loosen dirt and grime. You can then remove the earrings and brush with a wet toothbrush. For silver earrings, soaking them in warm water with a sprinkle of baking soda for about an hour can also be effective. Whichever method you choose, you should then rinse your earrings in water and gently dry with a soft, clean cloth (or leave to air dry).
How do you store earrings?
It's a good idea to think about an appropriate storage solution for your earrings, otherwise, you risk losing one of a pair or forgetting what you’ve got. Hanging or hoop earrings can also easily become tangled if they’re not stored in an organised way. Jewellery boxes often have sections for earrings, but these may not accommodate your full collection, or they may work for studs but not be ideal for hoops or pendant earrings. Trinket cases or earring stands can be a good idea as they allow you to store your earrings in divided sections or hang them in pairs.
What do you clean earrings with?
Avoid harsh chemicals when cleaning your earrings as these can damage precious metals and gemstones. It’s best to use warm water with some dishwashing soap for regular cleaning, but you can also use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol if you want more of a thorough disinfectant. A sprinkle of baking soda in some water can also work well to restore the shine to sterling silver pieces. You can use a soft toothbrush to work into all of the parts of the earrings, but always be gentle when brushing or rubbing delicate pieces. Use a clean, soft cloth to dry and polish your earrings, or let them air dry. At Secrets we also have a great range of jewellery cleaning products available in-store and online.
Is there such a thing as earrings for sensitive ears?
If the skin around your piercing is irritated, itchy, or painful, this is often a sign that your skin is reacting to your earrings. If you already suffer from eczema or dermatitis then the skin of your earlobes will likely also be sensitive and prone to reactions. In this case, it’s best to choose hypoallergenic materials, and to avoid nickel or copper. Choosing high-quality metals, such as 10ct gold or sterling silver S925, will reduce the chance of a skin reaction or infection at the piercing. At Secrets Shhh, we have an extensive selection of 10ct gold earring designs in yellow, white or rose gold, and all of our sterling silver earrings are stamped S925 so you can be sure that they are nickel-safe. With such a wide range of styles and designs to choose from, there’s no need to compromise.
Are women’s and men’s earrings the same thing?
In short, yes. The standard sizing of men’s and women’s ear piercings is the same, and the same earrings can be worn by men and women. It comes down to a personal style choice. Traditionally, women are more likely to wear hoops, long drop earrings, or particularly sparkly statement earrings, whereas men are more likely to choose studs or less decorative designs. But there are no rules! The Secrets Shhh collection includes such an extensive range of styles, materials, shapes, and thicknesses that there is something for everyone.
How do I choose between silver earrings and gold earrings?
When choosing between gold and silver earrings, it mostly comes down to personal taste. As a general rule, gold tends to suit warmer skin tones and darker eyes, whereas white gold and silver complement fairer skin. But it also depends on your outfit and style choices, and you can even mix metals if you have multiple ear piercings. Both silver and gold are hypoallergenic when you buy good quality pieces. For example, all of our sterling silver earrings at Secrets Shhh are crafted from S925 silver so you know you are getting the finest quality on the market (92.5% pure). Gold offers the classic yellow gold finish, white gold as an alternative to silver, or rose gold for a romantic and contemporary look. Gold is more resilient and durable than silver, and less likely to get scratched or tarnished, but with the right care, a sterling silver piece can easily be restored to a perfect shine. Silver also tends to be more affordable than gold, but it depends on the specific style you choose and the incorporation of gemstones.
